When people think of being healthy they often only think about diet, but health embodies so much more than that. Health is the physical and mindful state of well-being. The physical aspect of health includes skin care, diet, and activity. Our skin is the largest organ of the body and a primary interface with the world around us. Hence, we need to be mindful of what we are putting on our skin and exposing it to. What we put into our bodies affects the way we feel mentally and physically, giving us energy, immunity, and strength. Having a nutritious diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats can help promote our health and wellness. It will also give us the nutrients and antioxidants to prevent against diseases. Probiotics, from natural sources, play a key role in keeping our immune systems strong. A healthy diet is a key component to physical wellness. Finally, being active is important for keeping our muscles and bones strong. The heart is the most important organ in the body, and a combination of exercise and diet can keep it sturdy and fit.

Mental health comes from managing stress and anxiety, and maximizing overall peace of mind and happiness. People manage stress and anxiety in all different ways. I deal with stress by meditating, exercising, and breathing. I choose to meditate most mornings for 5 to 10 minutes before I start my day. I read a book and stay in the moment. I usually do some sort of activity every day whether it is yoga, orange theory, sand volleyball, or taking a walk. It is time for me to not think about anything else except my body moving. Lastly, I breathe. I take a minute or two to just sit and breathe deeply in and out. I find this is the best way to calm my heart rate and relax.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending Great Lakes Wellness event. I represented Cleveland Kraut promoting the physical side of wellness. There were many vendors representing many different aspects of wellness such as skin care, nutritional supplements, and jewelry/fashion designers. Each vendor depicted a side of physical and mindful wellness. Following a passion for fashion or health is a mindful state of wellbeing, whether we realize it or not. People cope with stress and anxiety by making works of art, or by feeding their bodies with nutritious food. There is no one recipe for being healthy; it is a combination of physical and mental choices. How do you stay healthy? Think about this question and decide if there are things you need to take a step back and work on. This isn’t a week long diet, this is a way of life.
